Momentum is building across Canada and in manitoba for a national school food program!

The Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba is actively involved in promoting school food in Manitoba and are members of the national Coalition for Healthy School Food, a group of organizations seeking federal investment in a Universal Healthy School Food Program to support the health, well-being and education of all Canadian children. Many national organizations also work on school food in Manitoba.

The Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba works together with stakeholders across the province, sharing resources and collaborating on collective advocacy and research. Together, we can help secure a brighter future for our children through a universal healthy school food program.

In Manitoba, the Council provides funding and support to schools  in every region of the province.

Council funded programs are universal, and are available for any school-age student at no cost to the student regardless of perceived need. Schools identify a need for a program and apply for support each spring. The programs are unique to each school, and school staff work hard within their school communities to ensure their students’ needs are met.

These programs are organized at the school level and largely rely on parents, charitable foundations and others in the school community for funding and development. This patchwork approach does not meet the needs of all students to access healthy, nutritious food during the school day. The development of national standards is critical, as well as significant investment from federal, provincial and municipal governments (to supplement the contributions of school communities, businesses and volunteers) and collaboration between stakeholder groups to create a universal program for all children and youth from K to 12.
